Your Bookkeeping Bill May Have Gone Up This Fall, Even If You Changed Nothing

QuickBooks Online Essentials, Plus y Advanced cuestan más en las renovaciones del 1 de agosto de 2026 o después. El mismo software, una factura más alta para muchos negocios.

If you run a shop, a farm office, or a two-person service company, bookkeeping software is not optional — it is how invoices go out and taxes get filed.

What to do: Open Subscriptions and Billing this week and write down your plan, your renewal date, and the price that will apply next — before that date arrives.

That is the nut of it: Intuit said monthly prices for QuickBooks Online Essentials, Plus, and Advanced changed for renewals on or after August 1, 2026, while Simple Start did not change [1]. Intuit's change takes effect at renewal, so the higher price arrives without you doing anything. For comparison, Xero's United States list prices, as checked October 17, 2026, are $27, $59, and $97 after introductory discounts [3].

The new list prices are now the renewal prices

SWK Technologies, a QuickBooks reseller and hosting provider, summarizing Intuit's 2026 changes on September 14, 2026, listed QuickBooks Online at $38 a month for Simple Start, $85 for Essentials, $140 for Plus, and $340 for Advanced, as of that date [2]. Intuit's own post confirms which plans changed and when, and says a recent subscriber keeps the starting price for the first six months [1].

For Xero, the company's United States pricing page listed Early at $27 a month, Growing at $59, and Established at $97, as checked October 17, 2026, after introductory discounts expire [3].

A small monthly rise becomes a real annual line

Our calculation: a Plus subscriber moving from $115 to $140 a month pays $25 more a month, or $300 more over 12 months. An Advanced subscriber moving from $275 to $340 pays $65 more a month, or $780 a year. Those prior prices are the ones SWK says a current subscriber would have seen before this round [2].

Think of it like a rent increase on a toolbox you cannot work without: the tools did not move, but keeping them in the truck costs more each month.

The other side says you are getting more for it

Intuit said the increase supports new capabilities, including automated categorization, invoicing help, and business-intelligence features, and noted Advanced now includes Bill Pay Elite, which it values at $540 a year, plus construction and professional-services tools it values at $900 a year [1]. We summarize that as Intuit's stated case, not as proof the features fit your shop.

Xero's page likewise lists added forecasting, bill-payment, and analytics features by tier [3]. If you do not use those features, that is not a reason to switch on price alone — switching has its own cost in cleanup and retraining — but it is a reason to check whether a lower tier would do.

For your IT provider

What this means for Southwest Michigan

For a Plainwell retailer on Plus or a contractor in Otsego juggling multiple company files, the question differs. QuickBooks Online charges per company, while older Desktop handled multiple files under one license, a difference SWK works through in detail [2]. Running three companies on QuickBooks Online means paying for three subscriptions, a cost SWK illustrates as $5,040 a year versus $1,680 for one Plus plan [2].

Ask your accountant, before renewal, three things: how many companies are billed, how many seats are actually used, and whether payroll or bill-pay add-ons are duplicated. Do not cancel anything until the accountant confirms filings and bank feeds will not break.

Kicker — do this week: Put your renewal date and next price on the office calendar, and ask your accountant whether every billed company and seat is still needed.
